The main reason why the mayans collapsed was due to the change in weather. Drought, directly followed by hurricanes were the primary reason why the Mayans fell. Many climatologists believe that hurricanes are countercyclical to periods of drought. This provided a double blow to the Mayan farmers, this is because first there crops would start to dry out. Then they would flood. (Werner,Louis 40-47) This proves that the Mayans perished due to climate changes.
Drought was caused by the rising temperatures that disrupted the rainfall patterns. The rising temperatures created a dry season, and water became very scarce. Ground water was far too deep to reach. So Mayans had to rely on very little rainfall. Due to little rainfall the Mayans died of thirst wiping out a large area. (Science.nasa.gor/science/news/science-atnasa/2004/15nor-maya/)
Almost every Mayanist agrees that there is way more then one cause that led to the disappearance of the Mayans. However, almost all of those scientist elieve that drought was on of the main reasons. One of the mayanist stated that the drought was like "the final nail in the coffin." Another expert explained that you could think of a domino chain reaction. The collapse couldn't have been caused by drought alone, but maybe the drought "domino" knocked another to cause them to tip over. Both of them together cause the collapse. (Werner,Louise 40-47)
Overall, scientist believe that the Mayan civilization collapsed for more then one reason. However many of these scientist agree that drought was one of the big factors that played a part in the disappearance of the Mayans. Therefore, the Mayans perished due to weather changes. (Werner, Louis 40-47).
